Ways to support

If you are interested in volunteering with TRAC (Tay River Algonquian Community) please give us a call, and let us know what kind of work you are interested in doing (e.g. maple syrup sap collecting, research, writing, field work, fundraising, proposal/grant writing, social media, workshop/event planning, archival work, maintenance/repair, graphic design, photography, videography, editing, community outreach, etc.), and/or any of our specific projects you might be interested in, and/or if you are a high school student completing your community service hours.

Volunteers for the Maple Syrup Season

During sugar shack season, weather can sometimes be unpredictable. To help keep everyone safe and comfortable, we ask volunteers to meet at the Cultural Center’s front gravel parking lot. You’re welcome to park your vehicle there and meet our pickup crew, who will drive you to the sugar shack. The drive is about 10 minutes along our dirt road.

Volunteers may choose from several activities, including:

  • Pick up sap from the bucket pails

  • Tapping new trees and installing new buckets

  • Keeping the outside fire burning

  • Stirring and watering the cast iron cook pot on the open fire

  • Cutting wood and using a wood splitter

  • Keeping the evaporator and counter clean

  • Pouring, filtering, finishing and bottling the finished maple syrup

  • Labelling and storing the maple syrup bottles

  • Listening to sugar shack stories

  • Picking, cleaning and storing the pails at the end of the season

  • Enjoying a wilderness walk or ATV tour on the farm property

  • Making and eating fresh taffy on the snow

  • Asking all the questions you have about maple syrup, wilderness management, forest management, indigenous history, legends, culture, and traditions
